Job Description

**Job Title:** Funeral Director Apprentice **Job Type:** Full\-time **Reports to:** General Manager / Licensed Funeral Director **Job Summary** We are seeking a compassionate, professional, and dependable **Funeral Director Apprentice** to join our team. This position is designed for an individual who is pursuing a career in funeral service and wants to gain hands\-on experience under the supervision of licensed funeral directors and embalmers. The Funeral Director Apprentice will assist with arrangements, services, documentation, removals, and preparation room duties while learning the standards, legal requirements, and family\-centered care essential to funeral service. This role requires empathy, attention to detail, professionalism, and a willingness to serve families during difficult times. **Key Responsibilities** * Assist licensed funeral directors with meeting families and coordinating funeral, memorial, burial, and cremation arrangements * Help greet families and visitors with professionalism, compassion, and discretion * Support arrangement conferences by preparing documents, gathering information, and helping ensure family wishes are accurately carried out * Assist in completing permits, death certificates, authorizations, and other required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner * Participate in and attend funeral and memorial services, helping ensure each service is carried out smoothly and respectfully * Assist with post\-service follow\-up and ongoing family support as directed * Help coordinate team members involved in services and maintain a professional appearance and atmosphere * Assist with transfers and removals of decedents from place of death, hospital, residence, or other locations as needed * Learn and assist with dressing, casketing, cosmetology, and preparation duties as permitted by law and under appropriate supervision * Support embalming and preparation room operations, including sanitation, disinfection, inventory, PPE readiness, and proper disposal of hazardous materials according to regulations * Verify merchandise, supplies, and service details against contracts and family selections * Maintain accurate records and documentation * Perform other duties as assigned to support the needs of the funeral home, cemetery, or crematory operation **Qualifications** * High school diploma or equivalent required * Enrolled in, eligible for, or actively pursuing an apprenticeship or education program in funeral service, mortuary science, or a related field preferred * Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required * Ability to work respectfully and effectively with grieving families * Strong communication skills and a calm, professional demeanor * Ability to follow direction and learn under supervision * Comfortable working evenings, weekends, and on\-call rotations as needed * Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email * Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations **Physical Requirements** * Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift as needed throughout the workday * Ability to lift, move, and carry up to 100 pounds independently and more with assistance when necessary * Ability to work in both office and preparation room settings * Ability to safely work around chemicals, formaldehyde, and bloodborne pathogens with proper PPE and training **Work Environment** This position works in a funeral home, cemetery, and/or crematory environment. The role includes regular interaction with families and visitors and requires professionalism, empathy, and discretion at all times.
