Why does the job exist?
This position manages and maintains the operations of the Taos State Veterans Cemetery. This involves the supervision of two employees, plans and executes commemorative memorials for US Veterans and their families, conducts internment functions of the internment with headstones, grave locations, and scheduling. This position requires community outreach for rural communities in Northern New Mexico.
How does it get done?
This position requires knowledge of management and supervision. Responsibilities include supervising staff, assisting in interviews, conducting employee evaluations, approving time sheets, leave requests, and ensures that all staff are properly trained for their respective duties and assignments. This position schedules, plans, coordinates and oversees the daily internments of caskets, urn and maintains headstones of deceased veterans and eligible family members, along with conducting public affairs and outreach activities, and fulfilling reporting responsibilities for cemetery operations.

Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or equivalent and three (3\) years of experience in cemetery interment, construction, heavy and mid\-size construction equipment operation, and/or landscape maintenance/groundskeeping with a minimum of one (1\) year of supervisory experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3\) years may substitute for the required experience. Must complete training in compliance with NCA guidelines as soon as practicable following hire. Must complete training to become OSHA Ten (10\) certified and Cemetery Director Training within one (1\) year of hire.
Employment Requirements
Due to the nature of this work with burials occurring regularly, employee may be on\-call and exposed to inclement weather. May be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Travel may be required. Possible exposure to irate clientele. Incumbent will work under stress and frequent time constraints.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an outdoor setting. Use of ground tampers, compactor, and equipment for opening and closing crypts and lowering caskets. In addition, office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
