The Arborist is a dedicated tree care company entrusted with providing comprehensive arboricultural services at **Arlington National Cemetery**, one of the nation's most hallowed and historically significant sites. Spanning over 600 acres, the cemetery is home to a renowned Memorial Arboretum featuring thousands of trees (approximately 9,800–10,000 across hundreds of species and varieties, including many historic and specimen trees). Our work plays a vital role in preserving the dignity, beauty, and solemn atmosphere of this sacred ground, where we maintain the living landscape that honors our nation's heroes.
We are currently seeking a **Certified Arborist** to join our team as **Site Manager**. In this leadership role, you will oversee and lead a 10\-person crew in performing all tree\-related maintenance and operations across the property. Key Responsibilities
* Serve as the on\-site leader for a 10\-person crew, coordinating daily operations, assigning tasks, and ensuring high\-quality execution of all work.
* Oversee an annual program that includes:
* Pruning over 2,500 trees per year in accordance with industry best practices.
* Removing approximately 400 trees (including hazard assessments, safe takedowns, and stump management).
* Planting approximately 400 new trees, with proper site preparation, planting techniques, and follow\-up care.
* Implementing and managing a Plant Health Care (PHC) program, including monitoring for pests/diseases, treatments, and preventive measures.
* Conducting regular watering, mulching, and support for new and established trees.
* Performing specialized techniques such as air spading (e.g., for root collar excavation and soil decompaction).
* Handling any additional tree\-related tasks as needed to maintain the cemetery's arboretum and landscape.
* Ensure strict adherence to **ANSI A300** standards for all tree care practices, including pruning, removal, and planting specifications.
* Prioritize and enforce safety protocols at all times, conducting daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, and compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and site\-specific requirements in a high\-visibility, sensitive environment.
* Maintain clear, professional communication with crew members, cemetery officials, supervisors, and stakeholders to report progress, address issues, coordinate access/logistics, and uphold the site's dignity.
* Document work performed, maintain records (e.g., tree inventories, PHC treatments, safety logs), and contribute to reporting requirements.
* Train and mentor crew members to build skills, promote best practices, and foster a culture of safety and professionalism.
Required Skills and Qualifications
* **ISA Certified Arborist** credential (required); additional certifications (e.g., TRAQ, Board Certified Master Arborist) are a plus.
* Proven experience leading crews in commercial or municipal tree care operations, preferably in large\-scale or high\-profile sites.
* Strong expertise in **ANSI A300** standards and their practical application in pruning, risk assessment, removal, planting, and PHC.
* Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) for leading teams, interacting with diverse stakeholders, and documenting work clearly and professionally.
* Demonstrated commitment to **safety** leadership, with a track record of incident\-free operations and proactive risk management.
* Solid knowledge of tree biology, identification, structural pruning, cabling/bracing, soil science, and integrated pest management.
* Physical ability to perform fieldwork in varying weather conditions and navigate a large, hilly terrain.
* Valid driver's license and ability to pass background checks (required for work at Arlington National Cemetery).
* Experience with tools and equipment common to arboriculture (chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, air spades, etc.) and a commitment to proper maintenance and safe operation.
