Job Description
: Cemetery Superintendent (Sexton)
: Cemetery
: CAO
: All Employees Assigned to the Cemetery Department
: Under general direction of City Administrative Officer (CAO), supervises and assists in the performance of activities necessary for the operation, maintenance and care of city cemeteries, including digging and preparing gravesites for burials, ensuring that cemetery grounds are well\-maintained, and managing the installation of grave markers. The sexton is also responsible for maintaining records of interments, managing burial plots, and ensuring compliance with local regulations. In addition to the physical tasks, the sexton often provides assistance to grieving families, offering guidance on burial procedures and cemetery policies.
:
1\. Grave Preparation, digging gravesites according to burial specifications, ensures graves are properly marked and assists in the placement of caskets and urns during burial services.
2\. Grounds maintenance, maintains cemetery grounds, ensuring they are clean, well\-kept and aesthetically pleasing, performs landscaping duties, such as mowing, weed eating, trimming trees, ensuring flower beds and walkways are neat and clear, repair and maintain cemetery infrastructure, including fences, roads and signage.
3\. Burial site management, keep accurate records of burial plots, ensuring proper documentation of interments, sell, manage and assign burial plots to families and funeral homes, ensure compliance with local regulations and cemetery policies regarding burials.
4\. Customer service, provide guidance to grieving families, assisting them with the burial process, plot selection and other cemetery related questions, maintain a professional, empathetic, and respectful demeanor when interacting with the public.
5\. Administration and record keeping, maintain and update interment records, including grave locations, dates and other pertinent information, supervision of cemetery staff and time approval, responsible for purchasing and inventory management, ensuring required paperwork is properly completed and filed.
6\. Equipment maintenance, operate and maintain equipment, such as lawnmowers, backhoes, and other machinery used for cemetery maintenance, perform routine checks and repairs on equipment to ensure it is in good working condition.
7\. Compliance and safety, ensure all cemetery activities comply with local, state and federal regulations, adhere to safety standards and practices to protect visitors, staff and cemetery property.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
: Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED) plus three years related experience in landscaping maintenance.

1\. Extensive knowledge of applicable statutes and ordinances governing the operation the the city cemetery.
2\. Extensive knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a cemetery.
3\. Extensive knowledge of functions and servicing/maintenance requirements of equipment and machinery used.
4\. Extensive knowledge and ability to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
5\. Extensive knowledge of local, state and federal regulations regarding burials.

1\. Ability to interact with grieving families with empathy and professionalism.
2\. Ability to supervise personnel assigned to division.
3\. Ability to detect mechanical flaws and assist with minor equipment repairs.
4\. Ability to operate heavy machinery, including backhoes and lawn care equipment.
5\. Ability to perform manual labor and work in various weather conditions.
6\. Ability to provide training and orientation as needed to new employees in the division.
7\. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officers, employees and the general public.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
: Instructions are very general; must use own judgment most of the time.
: Must frequently refine existing work methods and develop new techniques, concepts and programs within established limits or policies.
: Work is reviewed through oral and/or written reports as requested.
: Assignments involve decisions based on a wide knowledge of many factors where application of advanced concepts is required.
: Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, some physical labor is required, including lifting, digging, standing, walking, stooping; must lift objects over 50 pounds; must operate vehicle and equipment.
: Vehicle; all equipment and tools assigned to the divisions.
: Frequent public and internal contacts requiring tact and diplomacy are requirements of the job.

: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
