Job Description

A full\-time position exists for a Cemetery Operations Assistant at our parish cemetery, St. Agnes Cemetery. Duties include, but are not limited to, mowing and trimming lawns, general groundskeeping activities (including raising sunken graves), digging cremation graves, installation of flush grave markers, digging foundations for upright monuments, assisting with burial\- and entombment\-related activities, and snow removal at the cemetery and St. Mary Church. Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license. Requires a high level of physical agility. Experience in operating tractors, commercial mowing equipment, and lift devices a plus. Specific work hours may vary, depending on seasonal needs (grass cutting in summer, leaf collection in fall, plowing in winter, etc.), and burial schedules, and may include some Saturday hours. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Perform activities related to interments and entombments, coordinating with contracted grave diggers, vault installers, etc. includes physical tasks such as placement and removal o f lowering devices, greens, chairs, and planks, digging cremation grave etc. May include use o f lifting device to place caskets in mausoleum crypts. * Maintain cemetery grounds to ensure seasonally\-appropriate appearance, including (but not limited to) lawn care (cutting and trimming) in spring and summer; leaf collection and disposal in fall; snow removal in winter; and late\-winter "major clean\-up" of winter decorations. * Regularly police grounds to remove litter, wilted flowers, etc., and to identify disallowed decorations for possible removal. Empty trash cans weekly, or more frequently if necessary. * Perform work related to monuments (foundation work, repositioning sunken markers, etc.) and routine repair of graves (adding topsoil and grass seed to sunken and new graves, etc.). * Ensure that equipment, tools, etc. are properly maintained and stored. * Maintain good public relations with families, funeral directors, and the wider community. * Ensure the safety of visitors t o the cemetery. * Report accidents, vandalism, etc. to cemetery management. * Observe all work rules regarding attendance, safety, behavior, maintenance of smoke\-free environment, and non\-use of cell phone for other than work\-related communications. May include attendance at mandated training/education programs * May require occasional Saturday morning burial\-related work. * Other related duties as may b e assigned. SECONDARY DUTIES: * May provide groundskeeping services (mowing, plowing, etc.) and other facilities services t o St. Mary Church and St. Therese Church. NOTE: Snow plowing may require adjustment o f work schedule t o ensure a safe environment for daily and weekend Mass schedule.
