Cemetery Foreperson/Work Leader

Compensation: $26\.76 – $40\.48 per hour based on experience and what position you would be placed under. Payrates are set by the Collective Bargaining Agreement Between the City of Barre and AFSCME Local \#1369, Council 93\. Summary/Objective The Cemetery position is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, administration, and oversight of the municipal cemetery. This position ensures that cemetery grounds are maintained respectfully and professionally, burial services are coordinated efficiently, and records are accurately maintained. Essential Functions Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to meet the following: **Cemetery Operations** * Coordinate and oversee all burials, interments, disinterment’s, and cremation placements. * Mark grave locations and verify burial sites prior to services. * Work with funeral homes, monument companies, clergy, families, and contractors. * Ensure cemetery activities comply with applicable laws, regulations, and cemetery policies. * Assist visitors with locating gravesites and answering questions regarding cemetery services. **Grounds Maintenance** * Maintain cemetery grounds, roads, walkways, and landscaping. * Operate and maintain equipment including mowers, tractors, loaders, excavators, and hand tools. * Perform mowing, trimming, pruning, leaf removal, snow removal, and general grounds upkeep. * Inspect cemetery property for safety hazards and needed repairs. **Recordkeeping and Administration** * Maintain accurate burial records, maps, deeds, permits, and cemetery databases. * Process lot sales, transfers, and related documentation. * Prepare reports and maintain files in accordance with municipal record retention requirements. * Track inventory of available burial lots and cemetery assets. **Customer Service** * Meet with families and funeral directors regarding burial arrangements. * Provide compassionate and professional assistance to the public. * Respond to inquiries concerning cemetery regulations, fees, and services. **Equipment and Facility Maintenance** * Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment. * Coordinate repairs and maintenance of cemetery buildings, fences, monuments, and infrastructure. * Maintain supplies and equipment inventory. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1 Knowledge of cemetery operations and burial procedures. 2 Ability to operate heavy and light equipment safely. 3 Knowledge of grounds maintenance and landscaping practices. 4 Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills. 5 Ability to communicate effectively with the public and funeral service professionals. 6 Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment. 7 Proficiency with basic computer software and record management systems. Additional Eligibility Qualifications Experience in grounds maintenance, public works, landscaping, cemetery operations, or a related field preferred. Ability to require any required certifications or licenses. Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable)Must be authorized to legally work in the United States Must possess a valid State Driver’s License in good standing Must be able to get to and from work on a consistent basis Supervisory Responsibility This position will require supervision for seasonal cemetery staff. Stand, walk, bend and kneel and operation of equipment for extended hours. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This position is classified as non\-exempt full\-time. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a half hour lunch break. Travel Local travel required to different City buildings and all the City cemetery locations. Additional Eligibility Qualifications None required for this position.
