Cemetery Caretaker

**Description** Under the direction of the Operations Superintendent is responsible for the care and upkeep of the City Cemetery. Trains and gives daily directions to the Temporary Grounds Maintenance assigned to the cemetery. **Essential Duties \& Responsibilities** * Supervises and is responsible for care and upkeep of the city cemetery, including grave opening and closing, sale of graves, location of graves, grass mowing and weeding, grave stone placement \& repair, tree \& shrub trimming, weed control, litter control, building maintenance, record keeping for all duties performed at the cemetery including correspondence with funeral directors, clergy, family members and other interested parties. * Participates in construction and maintenance projects for city properties. Projects include street division / forestry duties on an as needed basis throughout the year and in the winter months when daily cemetery attendance is not necessary. * Participates in snow plowing and hauling along with leaf collection and litter \& debris control duties. * Utilizing carpentry, painting, mechanical and other skills are all essential to this position. * Operates end loaders, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, and rollers, and needs to be able to operate bucket truck, grapple\-loader, limb chipper, stump grinder, power saws, and other tree\-trimming and cutting equipment and other related equipment utilized by the street / forestry division. * Directs the work of assigned crew. * Trains crew members on proper performance of duties. * Enforces safety regulations and interprets safety policies to workers. Ensures compliance with work rules. * Inspects and tests equipment to verify conformance with safety guidelines and directs setup and adjustments of said equipment. * Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems. * Responsible for inventory stock control for assigned projects. * Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crews. * Develop and maintain required records, reports, and documentation for equipment and cemetery maintenance. * Issues work requests for general operations and/or building maintenance and equipment repairs. * Responds to citizen complaints and after\-hour service requests. * Will be subject to emergency call\-in for operational or weather emergencies. * Maintains time and work records. * Perform other duties as assigned. **Minimum Requirements** * Must have a High School Diploma or GED. * A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s license, with Air Brake Endorsement or ability to obtain permit within 90 days of hire. * Illinois Dept. of Agriculture Public Applicator License, with General Standards, and Right\-of\-Way Endorsement or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire. * One (1\) year of mowing or landscape experience. * Previous Cemetery experience is a plus. *Starting rate for this position is $26\.81/hour with an excellent benefit package that includes health, dental, vision, \& life insurance, paid time off, plus an IMRF pension.* **To be considered for this position, please complete an online application on our website at www.cityoffreeport.org This position is listed under the City Jobs tab.
